It rained like crazy overnight at Anini Beach. I spent the night under a covered picnic area which was just about bearable, but even here spray from the downpour wafted annoyingly into my face and interrupted my attempts at sleep.

6 June 2007 Moloa Bay to Anini

The dawn sun rays through the trees woke me up to a beautiful morning in Moloa Bay. I was really excited about the day ahead as I would now be paddling along the dramatic and varied north coast of Kauai. As well as this the easterly trade winds would be increasingly to my back as I headed more in a westward direction.

It was a bit of a rough night under the tarp flapping from an overturned deck chair. Still, life was simple and there was only one thing to do, get in the water and paddle north.

The plan was to kayak around the island over the course of two weeks, however, spoiler alert, did not make it . The weather radio revealed the NW swell was down to 8 feet and with northerly winds forecast I felt confident about the journey down the cliffy west coast today.

It was low tide as I paddled out from the bay and the Sunny grinded against the very shallow reef.

An uncomfortable night riddled with nightmares about losing the boat and equipment in tides and swells was accompanied by a rising wind that beat through the shoreline palms and bushes as the blinding moon swept overhead.

2 days after a stalled Kona storm dumped 15 inches of rain over 3 days on the usually dry island of Lanai, a weather window appeared and I made my move to try and kayak around the island.
